Last year student testimonials:
I never thought that learning about barbecue communication would be my favorite conversation starter but taking this class has made it so! Learning about the rich history and culture of food communication, specifically barbecue, helped me have a greater appreciation for the craft and the communication around it. Having a moving classroom enriched the experience and helped submerse me fully into the art of barbecue. Taking this class was truly the highlight of my college experience and something I won’t forget! ~Kendra
Not all special topics courses are created equal. BBQ Communication, though, is the Adonis of such courses because it can be appropriately described as just that: special. However, in this version of the tale, you'll be the one eating boar and not the other way around. During my time in Austin, I ate the best barbecue I've ever tasted, advocated for Sauce Rights TM, attempted to two-step dance, got my first high score at an arcade, practiced American Sign Language, laughed so hard I lost my voice for half a day, and solidified relationships I know will last a lifetime. Most importantly, I had all of these experiences while learning lessons on the intersections of identity, gender, culture, and barbecue that I carry with me and consider in my ongoing scholarship and research. Moreover, I was also able to pick up some tips and tricks regarding the facilitation of creative and personalized pedagogy. ~Marley
I think everyone should take BBQ Communication! Being able to go into the world and see effective communication not only in an organizational environment, but through a nonverbal, interpersonal and intercultural frame gives light to how our studies could impact our world. If you want to travel, eat the most delicious food, and have a chance to experience communication hands on BBQ communication is just the class for you. I will never forget my experience and have culminated most of my other assignments around the class itself. You will leave with food, friends, and so much knowledge when you experience the heart of BBQ and Texas. ~Savana
To anyone considering taking BBQ Communication, you should absolutely go for it. Take the leap into Austin's rich culture and completely immerse yourself in everything the course has to offer. The course provides a unique lens into all things communication, leaving you with an entirely new perspective. While taking this class, I learned about the history of barbecue, how culture and communication are inherently intertwined and how food brings communities together. I even discovered how BBQ Communication principles applied to my own family, allowing me to present my final project to my grandparents as a tribute to their BBQ joint, YaYa’s. This class was a game changer for my college experience, giving me an experience I will never forget. ~Max
